  Peggy Lee was born on November 16, 1938, in Orangeburg, South Carolina to her parents Bessie and David Myers. She was the eldest of eight sisters and four brothers.   She was educated in the Orangeburg County school system. She relocated from South Carolina to Florida, settling in Miami where she completed her studies. She then met and married Otis Lee.
